Local author releasing mystery book based on Spokane Clocktower

Local author Patricia Meredith’s first book will be released October 4. It is set in 1901 Spokane, and hinges around the building of the clocktower.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Old Spokane history inspired Patricia Meredith’s first published book, called ‘Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Taker.’

The historical mystery novel is set in 1901 Spokane, revolving around fictional character Archie Prescott’s involvement in a local murder investigation. Meredith based the character’s lives on true Spokane history, including the building of the iconic clocktower as the main character’s job.

"[Plus,] the coroner is an actual man who worked here. Just lots of places you can actually visit in Spokane that are featured in my book,” Meredith said.

This is Meredith’s first published book. It will be released in local bookstores, and online globally October 4.

The book is the first of a 12-book series Meredith plans on writing about the Spokane Clocktower. It took 5 years to write this first book, but she has plans to release the next two books in the series in 2022.

"Since I was 9 I've wanted to be an author,” Meredith said.

She got her start working as an editor for authors George R.R. Martin, Tracy Hickman and William H. Kieth. That experience gave her the expertise to self publish ‘Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Taker.’

The book will be for sale in local bookstores like Aunties. Readers can also find it online as a hard-copy, e-book or audiobook. Meredith will be hosting signings and readings in the weeks after her book’s release.

"its so fun. spokane has so much to offer. there's so much history here," she said.
