Spokane Symphony moves concert from Arbor Crest Winery to Fox Theater amid heat, smoke concerns

The decision to move the Sunset Concert comes amid concerns over high temperatures and poor air quality caused by wildfire smoke in the area.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Symphony will play their Sunset Concert at the Fox Theater on Wednesday night instead of Arbor Crest Winery as originally planned due to concerns over air quality and high temperatures.

The concert, conducted by Morihiko Nakahara, will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, instead of the originally planned location at Arbor Crest Winery at 7 p.m., according to Spokane Symphony Public Relations Manager Alison Highberger.

The decision came due to concerns over high temperatures in Spokane, which are projected to reach as high as 99 degrees on Wednesday, and low air quality due to smoke from the Williams Flats Fire moving into the area, according to Spokane Symphony Executive Director Jeff vom Saal.

"We made the decision to move the concert indoors due to the extremely high temperatures expected today, which impact the patrons’ enjoyment of the music, and also affects the musicians and their instruments," vom Saal said in a press release. "We are also concerned about poor air quality. For all of these reasons, we feel that everyone will be more comfortable in the air-conditioned comfort of Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox."

Spokane Symphony is not offering refunds for the concert because "it was not canceled, it was moved indoors for the safety and comfort of our valued patrons and musicians," according to Highberger.

The Fox will have limited concessions and a selection of Arbor Crest wines for sale, Highberger said. Tickets are still available at $22 a seat and can be bought on the Spokane Symphony website.
