SPOKANE, Wash. — This weekend, a new Dungeons and Dragons game shop is coming to Hillyard.
Bear Totem is on the second floor of the newly renovated United Building on North Market Street. It will be open for business on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Bear Totem is not your typical hobby store.
"I mean technically it's a hobby store," Owner Seth Miller said. "But, most hobby stores don't have beer taps."
Not only can you play various strategy games here, but beer is also available. Miller will serve taps from local breweries, including For the Love of God Brewing and Bellwether.
"I just wanted to create a space that was just less retail-focused, and more of a place for people who are in the hobby to just be able to come here and relax and have fun," Miller said.
This new space is equipped for multiple groups of dungeon masters and their players. Miller even built custom Bear Totem tables. Some include a screen that can display interactive maps.
You can let your imagination run wild at Bear Totem. But the fun starts by choosing from one of the thousands of characters Miller shares from his own D&D collection. It's the first thing you see when you reach the top of the stairs—all the miniatures displayed on LED-lit shelves that Miller built as well.
"Whenever I have 10 or 12-year-olds up here they sit and stare, like 'what is this?'" Miller said.
Building up this army of miniatures became a real-life quest for him.
"It took four or five years of continuously looking for the best deals and monitoring all the different websites that sell this kind of thing and, and finding things that I can trade for other things," Miller said.
Whether you're new to D&D or you've explored a few campaigns, all are welcome.
"I hope everybody comes here," Miller said. He also plans to host classes and workshops to get new players prepared for their first campaign.
But if D&D isn't the adventure you're looking for you can immerse yourself in the other board games Bear Totem has on hand.
On the same floor of the United Building, you'll also find "Pigasus," a vintage toy shop.
