SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane is giving out free trees to residents inside city limits as part of its Neighborhood Tree Program.
According to the city, 500 trees are being gifted to residents as part of the Neighborhood Tree Program this fall. Five hundred were also given away in the spring as part of the program.
People interested in getting a free tree can sign-up on the City of Spokane website. Those interested can also use an online tool offered by the city to find out where the best location is in their yard for the tree to maximize energy savings.
Types of trees still available include Chinese Fringetree, Eastern Hornbeam and Sweetgum, according to the website. The site doesn't list how many of the 500 have already been claimed.
The tree program is the result of a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation's Community Canopy program. Some benefits of planting the trees include lowered energy costs, reducing stormwater runoff, filtering air and water, combating climate change and making neighborhoods more green, according to the program's website.
Trees must be planted within the boundaries of private property and must not be on public property or along street right-of-ways. The city also expects people to use the online tool and plant the tree in the most effective location, according to the program's website.
The tree, which will be two to four feet in height, will be shipped to resident's homes for free with everything it needs to be planted.
The program's website includes videos showing how to properly plant the tree.
