Christmas is months away but a Green Bluff tree farm is already preparing

Legacy Christmas Tree Farm in Green Bluff plants 1,500 to 3,000 trees every year. Some of those won't be ready to harvest for another 10 years.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Monday marks 100 days until Christmas and Santa isn’t the only one hard at work preparing for the holiday season.

It’s crunch time for Legacy Christmas Tree Farm in Green Bluff with their busy season right around the corner.

Michael Beckman and his wife spend all year preparing for the short window of time when people visit their family farm during the holiday season.

“Every year we plant 1,500 to 3,000 trees,” said Michael Beckman, the owner of Legacy Tree Farm.

Those trees will not be ready to harvest for another 8 to 10 years. They have a variety of stages of Christmas trees currently growing on their farm.

“The year you plant them we call them the babies and then the ones over there are 4 to 5 years old, we call those teenagers,” Beckman added. “Sometimes a tree just doesn't want to be a Christmas tree and you give up on it. You have to plant three trees to get one to market."

This year’s batch of trees ready for lights and ornaments were planted back in 2006. Beckman said he starts decorating the farm into a winter wonderland mid-October.

“We have a specific barn that is nothing but Christmas. We have people come in and have hot coco, watch Christmas movies, Christmas music and Santa shows up," Beckman said. "We want you to spend some time and enjoy it, it’s a destination not just a stop on your day.”

The Christmas trees are ready for families to find their perfect fit.

“There is a lot to do here and there is a lot for us to get ready to make that happen," Beckman said.
