Haunted Spokane: Dangerous intersection has sinister past
The intersection's deadly history goes back 125 years.
SPOKANE, Wash. – Division and Sprague in Downtown Spokane is one of the most dangerous intersections in Spokane but a local ghost expert said there is much more to the story.
The streets divide the city from east to west and north and south but the intersection where they meet hold its own sinister distinction.
"Every conveyance known to man except an airplane and a rocket ship has had a fatal collision here. There's just a lot of anger in that intersection," said Historian and Ghostologist Chet Caskey.
Caskey said the intersection's deadly history goes back 125 years. On September 6, 1890, 200 pounds of dynamite exploded prematurely during a railroad construction project in what is known as Spokane's deadliest mass tragedy. It happened right along Division and Sprague. It is estimated that 26 workers lost their lives. The exact number is unknown.
"They could only recover 15 of the bodies. A newspaper reporter at the time said that those bodies will remain under that intersection until quote some careless spade inters them in some future year unquote," said Caskey.
Caskey said until that day comes the intersection is one you do not want to cross unless you are looking for something else.
