AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — Northern Quest Resort and Casino is set to host a wide variety of events to celebrate Native American Heritage Month throughout November.
Northern Quest says members of various tribes will take part in performances and showcase their art around the resort and Kalispel culture will be honored all month long in venues ranging from La Rive to Masselow’s.
“Native American Heritage Month is a time to reflect not only on the victories of our people, but also on the adversity we’ve overcome throughout the years,” said Kalispel Tribal Council Member and Northern Quest Resort & Casino General Manager Nick Pierre. “This event continues to grow each year, and we’re thrilled to share our tribal culture and traditions with the community.”
Below is a list of the events that Northern Quest will host:
Native Drum and Dance Exhibitions
- Saturday, Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 16 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Eddy venues. Members of several tribes will perform traditional drumming, dancing and singing. This event is free to attend.
Paint and Sip Events
- Saturday, Nov. 2 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Kalispel Casino in Cusick.
- Native American artist Annette Peone will host a painting session to lead participants to create a "Buffalo Under the Moon" inspired painting.
- Tickets are $55 and include art supplies, snacks and one beverage. Attendees must be 21 or older.
- Saturday, Nov. 23 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
- Native American artist Helen Goodteacher will lead participants to create a painting inspired by autumn flowers.
- Tickets are $60.
Second annual es kʷtis xʷistm “Walk with Pride” Fashion Show
- Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Pend Oreille Pavilion venue.
- Native designers will showcase their unique styles on local models representing surrounding tribes. Native DJ Shanner Escalanti will provide music.
- Tickets start at $25
Native Jam
- Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. near the Pend Oreille Pavilion venue.
- Native American performers Tony Louie, Isaac Tonasket and Tyus Beebe each take the stage for a night of live music and celebration.
- Tickets start at $25
Tribal Artisan and Vendor Fair
- Thursday, Nov. 7 through Sunday, Nov. 10 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day
- Native American artists and artisans will showcase their wares for people to buy.
- This event is free to attend.
Northern Quest Dance Championships
- Saturday, Nov. 9 from 12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- 16 dancers from various Native American tribes will take the stage to perform the traditional Fancy Shawl and Fancy Double Bustle dances. The dances celebrate tribal heritage as dancers don elaborate garments with brightly colored feathers and intricate beadwork.
- This event is free to attend
DJs at the Highball Lounge
- Every Friday and Saturday night in November
- Two Native American DJs, DJ Sterling and DJ Exodus, will curate the nighttime atmosphere at the Highball Lounge on Fridays and Saturdays.
Educational Displays
These displays will be in place throughout November
- Veterans Day display honoring Kalispel Tribal members who served in the U.S. armed forces
- Educational display dedicated to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women
- Display dedicated to the ongoing investigation of missing Native children who attended Catholic residential boarding schools
- Display honoring more than 400 Northern Quest employees who are enrolled members of 54 different tribes across the nation
Special food dishes and La Rive Spa experience
Each restaurant in the Northern Quest Resort & Casino will offer dishes that are created as a nod to customary cuisine and feature Pacific Northwest ingredients
- The East Pan Asian Cuisine will offer: Dan Dan Pork Fry Bread, Bison Fried Rice and Japanese Cheesecake with blueberry compote
- The EPIC Sports Bar will offer: Bacon Jalapeño Skillet Cornbread, Blackened Steelhead and Bison Burgers
- Masselow’s Steakhouse will offer: Roasted Corn Potato Soup, Pan-Seared Trout, Grilled Venison and Sweet Fry Bread
- Neon Pizza will offer: Smoked Salmon Pizza
The La Rive Spa will offer the special "Lavender and Sage Gel-Ohh!" service. The service includes a pedicure drawing inspiration from the herbs often used in medicine bags to heal physical and spiritual ailments.
