SPOKANE, Wash. — Lunar New Year celebrations are way underway in Spokane, and Saturday marks the halfway point of the well-known holiday.
One of those celebrations is at the Fox Theater. Hundreds of people came to celebrate the Lunar New Year of the Dragon. In the Chinese zodiac calendar, some consider the dragon the most significant sign.
Zhu is the president of the Spokane Chinese Association. The organization held their annual Lunar New Year event at the Fox Theater.
"We hosted a Lunar New Year celebration every single year ever since 2004," Zhu said.
For Zhu's organization, it's their second year at the Fox Theater, and it's their biggest celebration yet. The celebration showcased more than 30 activities for people, including magic performances.
"We incorporated some traditional Chinese magic," Lam Chan said. "It means a lot because we are thousands of miles from my hometown."
Chan's part of the Spokane Magic Club, and he's practiced magic his whole life. Chan uses his magic to teach people about his culture.
People attending know the event's significance.
"It's what I'm interested in," Kevin Shearer, event attendee said.
Shearer enjoys learning about Chinese culture in his free time. He hopes events like these help educate visitors.
According to Zhu, the most important part of the event is traditional Chinese performances like the dragon dance.
"Our goal is to have everyone take home with them the joy and festivity of Lunar New Year," Zhu said.
Zhu hopes to hold the event in the future.
