SPOKANE, Wash. — The Garland Theater announced on Monday that it would begin showing two monthly sensory-relaxed screenings in hopes of creating an environment for anyone, regardless of ability or disability to enjoy going to the movies.

The monthly screenings are in partnership with the ISAAC Foundation, a Spokane nonprofit that seeks to empower those who are impacted by autism, rare disorders or other developmental delays through educational and emotional support programs.

The sensory screenings will include having slightly brighter lights during the movie and softer audio. Additionally, the theater will provide separate sections, one for movie-goers to sit for the movie and one where movie-goers will be allowed to stand, dance and walk around during the movie.

Audience members will also be free to talk during the movie and sing along to the movie's music.

The shows will also feature closed captioning when available.

The first two screenings will take place Tuesday, September 10 at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday, September 14 at 11:30 a.m.

On Tuesday, the theater will show “Dungeons & Dragon: Honor Among Thieves” and on Saturday it will show "Kung Fu Panda 4."

Tickets to these movies are $5 and the theater says 50% of the proceeds will go to the ISAAC Foundation.

Beginning in September, the monthly sensory-relaxed screenings will take place at the following times:

  • Second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m.: PG13+ movies
  • Second Saturday of the month at 11:30 a.m.: All-ages movies
