Spokane gears up for 50th anniversary of Expo '74

Spokane Parks and Rec and Visit Spokane shared their plans with the community on Tuesday about how the city will celebrate the 50th anniversary.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Five decades after the World's Fair called Spokane home, the Lilac City’s getting ready to remember it in a big way.

Spokane Parks and Rec and Visit Spokane shared their plans with the community on Tuesday about how the city will celebrate the 50th anniversary.

To celebrate the anniversary, Spokane's holding several events focusing on several pillars, including environmental stewardship, celebrating the tribes and celebrating Spokane's diversity.

Yet, with less than a month to go before the celebration’s opening ceremony, Expo 50th Celebration program manager Matt Santangelo knows all too well there’s a lot of work still needing to be done.

"We’re also working through a handful of other, like, literally events still putting on the calendar." Santangelo said. "We’re at 90 now. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re at 105 by the time we’re done.”

Another announcement made Tuesday was the reveal of new commemorative uniforms for the Spokane Indians.

The team said they initially looked to the past for the uniforms, but changed their mind after seeing the 1974 team photo.

“We got a laugh because we thought, 'okay, maybe we do a throwback uniform to 1974,'” said Spokane Indians senior vice president Otto Klein. “But, they were this red, kind of faded burnt orange. We weren't quite sure, and we said, ‘You know what, let's scratch that. Let's start with a brand-new look.’”

The team will wear the uniforms for four games this season. They’ll debut on May 4.

The Expo 50th Celebration starts May 4 and runs through July 4.
