Capturing memories at Expo '74

50 years after Expo '74, one man relives the memories he captured and shares how the event helped fuel his career.

SPOKANE, Wash. — As celebrations for the 50th anniversary of Expo '74 in Spokane wrap up on the 4th of July, one photographer is pausing to remember some of the memories he captured at the event.

At the opening of Expo '74, Brent Uzzo accepted a job to move to Spokane and manage a photo booth at the event. He was 21 years old at the time. Little did he know that choice would lead to a 50-year career as a professional photographer.

"There was something going on every day in the fair," Uzzo said. "The World's Fair transformed Spokane, transformed my life."

Uzzo has amassed quite the collection of Expo '74 memorabilia. It includes tickets, a script from the opening day ceremonies, and of course, photos.

"I have a 50-year career after I left there, in the business of photo entertainment," he said.

As he looks back on the 50 years since Expo '74, Uzzo sees the change it brought to Spokane.

"You know, they took what was a problem area in the city," he said. "And they made it into a shining star. And it still is."
