Spokane Transit Authority offering free fares on weekends to celebrate Expo ‘74 50th Anniversary

During the 50th anniversary celebration, those heading to Riverfront Park can enjoy a free STA ride on the weekends. Fares will be greatly reduced during the week.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The 50th anniversary celebration of Spokane's most iconic world fair is just one week away, and the Spokane Transit Authority (STA) wants to help you get there.

The STA Board of Directors approved free weekend fairs across Spokane during the upcoming celebration of the 50th anniversary of Expo '74. For the entire nine-week celebration, bus and Paratransit rides will be free on Saturdays and Sundays across the STA downtown Spokane service area. Weekday fairs on the Downtown/North Bank shuttle will also be reduced to 50 cents during this time.

In addition, monthly Shuttle Park customers will receive a special pass price reduced from $40 to $22 for May and June.

Board members said the aim of the temporary free fares is to make it easy for residents to attend events without worrying about driving or parking.

“All of us at STA are excited to be an Expo 50th anniversary sponsor and offer fare-free transit service on weekends during the nine-week celebration,” said E. Susan Meyer, CEO of STA.  “Transit is an easy solution to getting around, and there’s no better way to honor Expo’s environmental theme than leaving the car at home.”

Free parking is also available for anyone taking the bus at all 14 of STA Park & Ride lots throughout the region.
