KREM 2 wins 4 regional Murrow Awards, including Overall Excellence

We are so happy to be honored by the Radio Television Digital News Association.

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Radio Television Digital News Association awarded KREM four regional 2018 Edward R. Murrow Awards.

The winners were announced Wednesday. Murrows are among the most prestigious award in broadcast journalism.

KREM competed against small-market television stations in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. KREM won four of the 15 Murrows in that category, including one for “Overall Excellence.”

KREM also won for Breaking News Coverage of the Freeman High School shooting. We tried to cover the incident as best we could while still being respectful of families and students as they mourned the loss of one of their own.

Whitney Ward led an investigation into the Fairchild Air Force Base water contamination, winning her a regional Murrow for Investigative Reporting. She, along with KREM 2 photographer Brett Allbery, turned an emotional story revealing the past abuses by the Air Force with firefighting foam and held the powerful accountable.

KREM 2's Darnay Tripp won for Sports Reporting, telling an incredibly emotional and unique story about a Gonzaga University climber exacting her revenge against her North Carolina competitor after the Zags lost to the same school in the basketball national championship.

Regional winners automatically advance to compete for a national Murrow award.

Last year, KREM won three regional Murrow awards, including Best Website, Hard News, and Excellence in Writing.
