South Hill icon Andrew Vathis honored at Spokane Indians home opener

Vathis was a huge Indians fans and attended multiple games each summer.

SPOKANE, Wash. — South Hill icon Andrew Vathis is being honored by the Spokane Indians Friday before the team’s first home game of the season.

He will be added to the team’s “Rim of Honor” along with Major League Baseball player Bill Buckner. In a press release, the team said they created the Rim of Honor in 2007 to honor both individuals and organizations that have positively contributed to the Indians and the city of Spokane both on and off the field.

Vathis, a courtesy clerk at the Albertsons on 57th Avenue, and a key player on the Ben & Jerry's Coneheads team at Hoopfest, was struck and killed by a car while walking home on Jan. 26. Vathis was a huge Indians fans and attended multiple games each summer.

“He had an infectious smile that brought joy to everyone he encountered, especially while at Avista Stadium,” the Indians said in a press release.

The ceremony takes place before first pitch at Avista Stadium.

Last weekend, community members who knew Andrew volunteered to hold a ceremony to dedicate the crosswalk and memorial in Andrew’s memory on Saturday at Albertsons.
