Idaho women win in controversial fashion over EWU

Mikayla Ferenz hit a buzzer beater to win it, but it wasn't that simple.

CHENEY, Wash. — With 20 seconds to go, the Eastern Washington Eagles trailed Idaho 72-69. They ended up losing 75-74, but there's a lot more to the story.

A three from Uriah Howard tied the game at 72, and then a inbound pass steal from Violet Kapri Morrow eventually led to a Grace Kirscher lay-up to take a 74-72 lead with 1.7 seconds left.

What happened after that though, was when the real controversy started.

Idaho heaved a half court pass to Lizzy Klinker who passed it to Mikayla Ferenz. She hit a bank shot three to win the game 75-74, however according to the clock time expired. On second look though, the clock operator started the clock as the ball was inbounded, not as when the ball was touched. The rule is that the clock starts once the ball is touched.

The officials then timed out how long it was from the ball being touched to the ball leaving Ferenz's hands, and determined she got the ball off in time. Idaho was named the winner 75-74.
