Officials canceled a level 3 evacuation notice that was issued to Grant County residents near a wildfire that has burned parts of State Route 17 Saturday afternoon, according to Grant County Sheriff's Office reports.

Residents were safe to return to their homes Saturday night at around 9 p.m.

Crews are still working to contain the fire, which is affecting areas between Road 24.4 south and Smokiam RV Park.

The Grant County Sheriff's Office reported via Twitter that the fire, deemed the Milemarker 81 Fire, has burned about 1,000 acres. It was not immediately known Saturday how much of the fire had been contained.

Even with the evacuation expired, SR17 was still closed Saturday night about five miles north of Soap Lake. Police have asked people to avoid the area and to take an alternative route.

A level 3 evacuation means residents are in immediate danger. During these type of evacuations, officials normally urge residents to leave the area immediately.
