Spokane homeowner's son tackles would-be-burglar, sits on top of him as he calls 911

SPOKANE, Wash. – A Spokane homeowner sprang into action when he woke up to a man he did not know standing in his kitchen.

It happened Thursday around 6:00 a.m. near East Upriver and North Cuba Street.

"Oh, he came down the stairs and said, ‘What are you doing?’ and the guy said, ‘Uhhhhh...’ and at that point he threw the hammer lock on him and threw him on the floor," said homeowner Tom Morgan.

Morgan was in the home asleep when his son encountered a burglar in their kitchen. He said the man was about to run out the backdoor, but his son was not about to let that happen.

"He tackled him, wrestled him to the ground and the noise of that woke me up. I came up to see what was going on and I helped hold the guy on the ground until the police got here," Morgan explained.

He said his son took the man down in the kitchen. The burglar clipped his head on the counter top on the way down. The two then pinned him down until police arrived.

"He called 911 while he was sitting on the guy," he said.

The burglar tried to steal two of Tom's jackets, a red suitcase carrying an instrument and a cell phone. Instead, the burglar left emptied handed in the back of a patrol car.

"I would hope that this would discourage some of his friends from doing the same and I hope it would encourage homeowners to take a stand when they can. I wouldn't want to see anyone get hurt, but in this case my son's not a little guy, he's athletic," Morgan said.
