Shelter opens at Bowdish Middle School, local speedway opens up parking lot to RVs

The American Red Cross is setting up shelters at Bowdish Middle School Tuesday night for people evacuating their homes.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash.-- The American Red Cross is setting up shelters at Bowdish Middle School located at 2109 Skipworth Drive Tuesday night for people and pets evacuating their homes.

The American Red Cross is encouraging residents to bring any prescription and emergency medication, extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and any other comfort items.

Additionally, the Red Cross recommends items for children and infants including diapers, formulas and toys.

Pets are welcomed at the shelter. The Humane Evacuation Animal Rescue Team will be at the shelter to support any pets that arrive with evacuees. Spokane Regional Animal Protective Service is also offering help to people with animals.

At the shelter, there was food and water. Buffalo Wild Wings and Papa John's donated food.

Stateline Speedway Event Center is also welcoming evacuees. They said if you are evacuated and need a place for an RV or trailer you are welcome to stay in their parking lot until it is safe to return home. For more information call 208-964-5136.

The Upriver Beacon Fire has burned between more than 200 acres as of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials have issued level 2 evacuations for south of Valley Springs, east of Shields Park and North of Upriver Drive. This means be ready to leave in a moments notice.

There are also level 1 evacuations in place for Bigelow Gulch Road to Argonne west. This means you should be alert. Police have also blocked off the top of Columbia Driver and are asking people to keep the street clear.
