After years of frustration, boundaries for Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene school districts could change

urns out part of that boundary slices through neighborhoods and even people's homes, putting them at odds. Now, district leaders are hoping for a compromise.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho -- Growing up it could be pretty hard going to different schools than your friends, but imagine what it is like to live on the same street as your friend and yet you go to a different school.

For years, that has been the situation for some people living in North Idaho and now they have had enough. This has to do with the boundary line separating the Coeur d'Alene School District from the Post Falls District. Turns out part of that boundary slices through neighborhoods and even people's homes, putting them at odds. Now, district leaders are hoping for a compromise.

In North Idaho, Stephanie Meeks is literally split about her kids' education.

"All the homes around us are in the CDA School District. Houses that are further west are in the CDA School District. It doesn’t make sense that we're not in the CDA School District," Meeks explained.

Meeks’ home is in an unfortunate spot. She lives in Coeur d'Alene but a school district boundary line slices right through her yard. As a result, when she starts taking her daughter to pre-school later this year, she will have to travel to Post Falls.

"In the morning, it's busy, so being closer would be much, much more helpful," Meeks said.

Dozens of other families are in Meeks’ situation. Faced with angry and fed-up parents, both the CDA and Post Falls districts are taking action.

At a packed meeting Monday night, district leaders proposed moving the boundary line. It would go from a frustrating set of zig-zags, to one clear-cut line. Even district leaders said that the current system of angles and curves are not working.

Both districts are now coming up with plans to move the boundary line, something that would require approval from Idaho's Department of Education. By the end of this year though, there is a chance Meeks will live in Coeur d'Alene and have her kids attend school in Coeur d’Alene as well.
